How Kroatien handles your pet

Key points

  • Croatia's dangerous-dog rule (Rules on Dangerous Dogs, Official Gazette 117/08) bars bull-terrier-type dogs and their crossbreeds unless they are in the FCI register: "the entry of dangerous dog breeds of the bull terrier type and their crossbreeds who are not in the register of the World Canine Organisation (FCI) can not enter in Republic of Croatia." A Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier or Miniature Bull Terrier can therefore enter with a pedigree from an FCI member kennel club: "Controlled breeding of the bull terrier type (Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, bull terrier, mini bull terrier) can be proven by pedigree issued by the kennel club of any member country of the World Canine Organisation (FCI)." (gov.hr)
  • Bring the pedigree with the pet's travel documents
  • Croatia also restricts how some dogs are kept in public once you arrive, which is a rule for the owner rather than for entry: "Dogs which are, because of their innate characteristics and aggressive instincts or training, dangerous for the safety of people, especially dobermanns, American Stafordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Pitbull Terriers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, German and Belgian Shepherds, Japanese fighting dogs, large Japanese spitzes, mastiffs, Illyrian Shepherd Dogs and their cross breeds, shall be kept in public area on leash and, at all times, with a muzzle." (mvep.gov.hr)
  • Two breeds are carved out of the muzzle half: "In exceptional cases, French Mastiffs and Neapolitan Mastiffs can be kept in public area on leash, but without a muzzle." (mvep.gov.hr)
