Key points

• Which group you are coming from decides almost everything
• Group A is Australia, New Zealand and eighteen Pacific neighbours: an import permit, a microchip and seven days of quarantine, with no rabies vaccination and no blood test
• Group B is everywhere else on the list — the United States, the United Kingdom, the EU, Japan and about seventy more — and it adds a rabies vaccination, an RNATT or FAVN antibody test taken 180 to 365 days before you fly, and thirty days of quarantine
• That 180-day test window is the longest lead time in the whole process; start there and work backwards
• If your country is on neither list, BAF is blunt: "If your country is not an approved country mentioned above, your pet is not eligible for direct import into Fiji." The way through is to move the pet to an approved country and complete six months of residency there first
• The permit is the real rule book
• Read yours when it arrives, footnotes included, and treat anything else — including this plan — as preparation
• Quarantine is a floor, not a ceiling
• Home quarantine is never an option; every cat and dog goes to the BAF Post Entry Quarantine station at Koronivia, near Nausori
• BAF warns that "7 days quarantine is the minimum requirement only and that any issues that may increase the biosecurity risk posed by the cat may result in a longer stay in post-entry quarantine (for example, if a tick is found on your cat, they will need to stay for 21-30+ days until they repeat their blood testing; at the importer's cost)"
• Kennel space is booked separately from the permit and BAF asks for six to eight weeks' notice, so book it the day your permit arrives
• Who cannot travel
• Note that BAF's own detailed conditions page gives a different pregnancy limit — "Cats must not be more than 30 days pregnant nor be suckling young at the time of export" — so if this affects you, ask the permit section at animalimports@baf.com.fj which figure applies before you book
• Nursing mothers are excluded either way
• How the pet travels
• Cargo only: BAF does not allow cats or dogs in the cabin or as accompanied baggage, the crate must meet IATA Container Requirement 1, and "Each animal must be confined in its own cage/box/crate
• No two animals or more may travel in one cage." Arriving by boat is a different regime altogether — "All cats and dogs arriving in vessels (via sea) onboard are not eligible to officially import into Fiji and must remain onboard a vessel throughout their stay in Fiji Waters" — so a yacht crossing gets an entry permit, not an import permit, and a three-month limit
• Passing through counts too: "Cats and dogs are allowed to transit only through Nadi International Airport with a maximum transit period of 12 hours", and that needs its own transit permit
• Assistance dogs
• A trained assistance dog still needs the import permit and every pre-export step, but is exempted from the quarantine, on evidence from a body such as the International Guide Dog Federation or Assistance Dogs International
• Emotional support animals are not: "Emotional support or comfort dogs or any other animal are not considered to be a service or assistance animal", and travel as ordinary pets
