Nicaragua is all volcano trails and warm water, and Nala already has opinions about the layover. Before any of that, the health certificate has to clear the USDA-accredited channel with the right endorsement. Sam and I timed the vet visit so the paperwork was fresh on travel day. Get the endorsement locked and the fun part starts on landing.

Bringing a pet to Nicaragua requires three documents in the right order: a microchip, a rabies vaccine within the destination's wait window, and a government-endorsed health certificate. The table below lays out exactly what's required, what's not, and where each rule comes from.

Nicaragua's health certificate runs through the USDA-accredited process, and for the APHIS veterinary medical officer an original ink endorsement is required. Electronic signatures are accepted from the issuing veterinarian, but the APHIS endorsement itself must be the physical inked version. Route the signed certificate to APHIS for that original endorsement and carry the stamped original to the airport.

Frequently asked

What if my flight is delayed past my health certificate validity?
If the certificate window expires before you board, you'll need a re-issue. Build a 1-2 day buffer between the cert date and departure to absorb minor delays.
What happens if I forget a document?
At the destination airport: at best, an extended inspection while you produce backup; at worst, the pet is held in quarantine or returned to origin at your cost. Bring printed copies.
Nicaragua rewards travelers who treat the endorsement as the first summit, not an afterthought. Lock the ink endorsement early and the whole trip opens up. Load your dates into a Pawgo plan and let the personalized plan chase every signature and deadline, so you spend arrival day chasing waves instead of paperwork.
