Luna's first certificate sat in a folder for eight of those days while I refreshed a ferry timetable. Northern Ireland runs on the EU entry rules, and the calendar is the part people underestimate.

These rules apply only to some travellers — where the pet is departing from, where it has been, or who is travelling with it. Most people can ignore them, but if one applies to you it can change what you need, or mean denied entry if you skip it.
Pet entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain — NI Pet Travel Scheme (pet travel document)
- Health certificate: DAERA: travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland needs no Animal Health Certificate — the pet travel document covers the journey. An AHC IS still needed if the pet continues onward to Ireland or another EU country, and that certificate is valid 10 days for entry and 6 months for onward EU travel.
- Rabies vaccine: From Great Britain, Northern Ireland is reached under the NI Pet Travel Scheme, not the EU entry regime. GOV.UK: with a Northern Ireland pet travel document (PTD) the pet must be microchipped but does NOT need a rabies vaccination. The PTD is free and lifelong, applied for from the Animal and Plant Health Agency. The base requirement on this page is the EU regime, which applies to arrivals from outside the United Kingdom.

Order matters here. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, not after it. A vaccination recorded against an animal that was not yet chipped does not satisfy the requirement, and it has to be given again once the chip is in. Compare the implantation date on the chip record with the vaccination date on the certificate before booking.
Entry is limited to five points: Belfast Port, Larne Port, Belfast International Airport, Belfast City Airport and City of Derry Airport. A route arriving anywhere else does not work for a pet. Belfast Port and Larne Port each take advance notice by email to their own address, so confirm the arrival point first and contact that specific port.
Ten days is the whole window. The Animal Health Certificate is valid for ten days from the date of issue for entry, then covers onward travel within the EU for six months. Book the vet appointment against the arrival date rather than the departure date, and treat the date of issue as day one.
Northern Ireland is a short hop with a paperwork tail, and the order of operations is what catches people: chip, then vaccinate, then certificate, then a named port. I keep a printed copy in three places now, which is less paranoid than it sounds when a ten-day certificate is involved. Build your plan with the actual dates and arrival point filled in, and the sequence sorts itself out.
